Renault 651

The Renault 651 is an agricultural tractor produced by the Agriculture subsidiary of Renault. With 65 hp and made at the Le Mans plant, it sold nearly 25,000 examples in all versions between 1972 and 1980: 18,229 two-wheel-drive and 6,764 four-wheel-drive. Renault had always favoured core-range tractors for medium-sized farms, as the D22 (over 31,000 sold in the 1950s) and the Renault 56 (17,458 between 1968 and 1973) showed, and the 651 of 1972 gave the same customers a stronger engine, technical improvements and the new styling begun with the 92, 94, 96 and 98 in 1969 and 1970. It uses an MWM four-cylinder in-line diesel of 3,770 cubic centimetres giving 65 hp DIN at 2,350 rpm, and answers earlier criticism with a gearbox of three ranges of four synchronised forward gears and one reverse. The 651-4 has a driven front axle from Carraro Agritalia, and the 651 S and 651-4 S followed.
