The waterborne transport of passengers aboard a ship operated primarily for the voyage itself, combining onboard accommodation, dining and entertainment with visits to a sequence of ports, rather than serving as point-to-point transport in the way a ferry or ocean liner traditionally did. Cruise shipping developed out of the earlier ocean liner trade as air travel took over long-distance point-to-point passenger crossings, leaving passenger shipping to reposition itself around leisure travel.
