A waterborne transport mode in which a vessel travels submerged beneath the surface rather than upon it, using ballast tanks to control buoyancy and depth. Submarine transport is used chiefly for military purposes, and to a lesser extent for scientific research, deep-sea tourism and specialized cargo or personnel transport in settings, such as beneath polar ice, where surface travel is impossible.
