The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact automobile that the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors produced from 1973 until 2024. The first generation, the A70, was launched in February 1973 to fill the gap between the Minica kei car and the larger Galant, and its sporting 1600 GSR model began the Lancer's long rally history by winning the Safari Rally twice and the Southern Cross Rally four times. Over its life there were ten generations, and between 1973 and 2008 more than six million units were sold. The car was marketed under many names, among them Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel and Mitsubishi Mirage, and from 2007 it was sold in Japan as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis. Mitsubishi ended Lancer production worldwide in August 2017 except in Taiwan, where production continued, with a facelift by Pininfarina's Chinese offices, until 2024, closing the nameplate after 51 years.
