SS Michelangelo

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Michelangelo was an Italian ocean liner built by the Ansaldo shipyards in Genoa for the Italian Line, launched on 16 September 1962 and completed for her maiden voyage on 12 May 1965 as one of the last ships built primarily for scheduled North Atlantic liner service before jet aircraft took over long-distance passenger travel. Fitted with a distinctive lattice-topped funnel design and accommodation for 1,775 passengers across three classes, Michelangelo operated alongside her sister ship SS Raffaello, and on 12 April 1966 she was struck mid-Atlantic by a rogue wave that killed three people and injured more than 50, prompting Italian Line to replace parts of her aluminum superstructure with steel. Michelangelo was sold to Iran in 1976 for 2 million dollars and was scrapped in Pakistan in June 1991.
