Tupolev Tu-144

Supersonic and Experimental Aircraft

The Tupolev Tu-144 is a Soviet supersonic passenger airliner that became the first supersonic transport aircraft to fly, in 1968, and the first to exceed twice the speed of sound, narrowly beating the rival Anglo-French Concorde into the air. Its external resemblance to Concorde led Western observers to nickname it Concordski, though the Tu-144 saw only a brief and troubled period of passenger service before being withdrawn.
