The Mooney M20 is a family of single engine light aircraft that Mooney introduced in 1955, distinguished by a forward swept vertical tail fin and a retractable landing gear that, combined with its relatively small, efficient wing, made it noticeably faster than many contemporaries of similar engine power. Successive M20 variants remained in production for decades, earning the type a lasting reputation among private pilots as one of the fastest normally aspirated piston singles available.

Why is the Mooney M20 dated to both 1953 and 1955?
The first M20 flew in 1953 and was certified in 1955.
The first M20 flew on September 3, 1953, but the airplane was not certified until August 25, 1955, so the type is dated by its first flight in some places and by its certification and market launch in others. Al Mooney was no longer with the company by late 1955, and two Midland, Texas investors, Hal Rachal and Norm Hoffman, helped bring the airplane to certification. The company sold only 10 of the airplanes that year before sales steadily grew.
