Diesel Multiple Unit

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

A diesel multiple unit, commonly abbreviated DMU, is a passenger train made up of one or more self-propelled diesel powered carriages that can be coupled together and driven from either end without a separate locomotive. Widely adopted from the 1950s onward on secondary and rural rail lines where full electrification was not economical, the diesel multiple unit remains a common form of regional and branch line passenger rolling stock on non-electrified railways worldwide.
