SS Great Britain

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Great Britain was a pioneering ocean liner designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and launched in 1843, notable as the first ocean-going ship to combine an iron hull with screw propeller propulsion rather than the wooden construction and paddle wheels standard at the time. Her innovations influenced the design of nearly all large ships that followed, and after a long working life carrying passengers and cargo, including many years on the England-to-Australia emigrant route, she was eventually abandoned and later salvaged, and is preserved today as a museum ship in Bristol, the city where she was built.
