GE Dash 9-44CW

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE Dash 9-44CW is a freight diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric beginning in 1993, part of the Dash 9 series developed for North American freight railroads and rated at 4,400 horsepower, with the CW designation identifying it as a six-axle, wide-cab variant. Built during a period of intense competition between General Electric and its rival Electro-Motive Division for freight locomotive orders, it was purchased in large numbers by major American freight railroads for hauling heavy unit and mixed-freight trains, and its wide, crash-resistant safety cab became a standard feature that influenced the cab design of nearly all later North American freight locomotives. Many examples remained in active freight service for decades after their introduction.
