Boeing 727

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The Boeing 727 is a narrow body, three engine jet airliner that entered service in 1963, designed with rear mounted engines and a T tail to allow operation from shorter runways than earlier jets required. It became one of the best selling commercial jet airliners of the twentieth century before production ended in 1984, serving as a workhorse of short and medium haul routes for airlines worldwide.

FAQs

What was distinctive about the rear airstair on the Boeing 727?

It was a built-in airstair in the rear underbelly of the fuselage.

The 727 had a built-in airstair that opened from the rear underbelly of the fuselage. It was included so the aircraft could operate independently of ground facilities, and it initially could be opened in flight. The hijacker D. B. Cooper used this hatch when he parachuted from the back of a 727 over the Pacific Northwest.
