Diesel and Electric Locomotives
GE Genesis

The GE Genesis is a series of passenger diesel locomotives built by GE Transportation Systems for North American rail service between 1992 and 2001, with 321 units produced for operators including Amtrak, Metro-North Railroad, Via Rail Canada and CT Rail. Depending on variant, Genesis models produce between 3,200 horsepower (the dual-mode P32AC-DM, which can also draw third-rail electric power) and 4,250 horsepower (upgraded P40DC and P42DC models), reach speeds of 103 to 110 miles per hour, and stand only 14 feet 4 inches tall, a compact height designed to clear the low tunnels of the Northeast Corridor. Compared with the EMD F40PH locomotives they replaced, Genesis units offered about 25 percent more power and 22 percent better fuel efficiency, and their computerized systems and low profile made them well suited to modern passenger operations through congested, infrastructure-constrained corridors.

FAQs

How tall is the GE Genesis and why was it built that height?

It is 14 feet 4 inches tall so it can pass through low Northeast Corridor tunnels.

The Genesis series is 14 feet 4 inches (4.37 m) tall. It was designed to meet Amtrak's specifications, and the height allows easier travel through low-clearance tunnels in the Northeast Corridor. The earlier EMD F40PH was 14 inches (356 mm) taller.
