The ETR 500 is an Italian high-speed train developed for the state operator Trenitalia and built through a consortium including Fiat Ferroviaria, Bombardier and AnsaldoBreda. It entered service in the 1990s as the first purpose-built high-speed trainset in Italy capable of sustained operation at up to 300 kilometers per hour on the countrys new high-speed lines. Operated for many years under the Eurostar Italia and later Frecciarossa service brands, the ETR 500 formed the backbone of Italian long-distance rail travel until it was progressively supplemented and partly replaced by the newer ETR 1000 generation.
