EMD GP38-2

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD GP38-2 is an American diesel-electric road switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division, introduced in 1972 as part of the Dash 2 line of upgraded electrical control systems applied across EMD's existing locomotive models. Built with a single, reliable diesel engine well suited to branch line, yard and light road freight service, it was purchased in large numbers by North American railroads and became one of the most common and long-lived diesel locomotive models in the United States, with many examples still in active freight and short line service decades after production ended.
