A calash is a light, low slung horse drawn carriage with a folding leather hood that can be raised for shelter or lowered in fine weather, developed in France and the Low Countries by the seventeenth century and adopted across Europe. In Quebec the calash, known there as the caleche, became a distinctive local vehicle and later a tourist attraction in Quebec City, where horse drawn caleches still carry visitors through the old town.
