John Brown & Company

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

John Brown & Company was a Scottish marine engineering and shipbuilding firm centred on its Clydebank yard on the River Clyde. The business grew out of a Sheffield steel and armour-plate firm, took over the Clydebank shipyard of J & G Thomson in 1899 and went on to build some of the most celebrated ships of the twentieth century, among them the Cunard liners Lusitania, Aquitania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Royal Navy battlecruisers Hood and Repulse. Its Brown-Curtis marine turbines won it major Admiralty orders. The shipyard was merged into Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968 and its last ship was completed in 1972, while the engineering arm survived as a gas turbine maker until the Clydebank works closed in 2000.
