BAE Systems Surface Ships is the name by which the Royal Navy shipbuilding arm of BAE Systems was known from 2009, and the business today trades as BAE Systems Maritime, Naval Ships, a wholly owned subsidiary specialising in naval surface shipbuilding and combat systems integration. It was formed on 1 July 2008 by merging BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions with VT Shipbuilding as BVT Surface Fleet, taking in the Scotstoun and Govan yards on the Clyde and the Portsmouth naval base facilities. BAE bought out VT in October 2009 and renamed it, folded it into BAE Systems Maritime in 2011 and rebranded it in 2012. It is the largest shipbuilding company in the United Kingdom and builds complex warships.
