Proton Holdings Berhad, usually called Proton, is a Malaysian multinational automotive company based in Shah Alam, Selangor, with further facilities at Proton City in Perak. It was established on 7 May 1983 as the country's national budget car company. In the 1980s and 1990s it built rebadged Mitsubishi models, including the first Proton Saga, before producing its own designs, and it became the largest carmaker in Malaysia for many years.
