Mahindra is the vehicle making arm of Mahindra and Mahindra, an Indian automobile manufacturer headquartered in Mumbai and part of the Mahindra Group. It was founded as a steel trading company on 2 October 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra and Mohammed by the brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra with Malik Ghulam Muhammad, and took its present name after Ghulam Muhammad moved to the newly formed Pakistan in 1948. It grew by assembling Willys Jeeps under licence in India and then making light commercial vehicles and tractors. Acquisitions include Punjab Tractors in 2007, which made it the world's largest tractor maker, the REVA electric car company in 2010, a majority of SsangYong Motor in 2011, and Peugeot Motocycles. It is one of the largest makers of SUVs in India and its electric XEV 9e is among its newer models.
