Alpine is a French maker of sports cars and racing cars, established in 1955 after Jean Rédélé, a Dieppe garage proprietor who raced the Renault 4CV, created the Alpine marque in 1954 and named it after his Coupe des Alpes successes. His glassfibre coupes on a stiff central tubular backbone chassis led to the A106, the A108 and the A110 Berlinette, and the firm worked so closely with Renault that its cars were sold and maintained in France by normal Renault dealerships. Renault bought Alpine in 1973, merged its competition department into Renault Sport in 1976 and phased the brand out in 1995. It was relaunched with the 2017 Alpine A110 and became an electric vehicle brand with the 2024 Alpine A290.
