Alfa Romeo is an Italian car maker founded in Milan in 1910 as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili and taking the name Alfa Romeo after Nicola Romeo took over in 1915. The firm gained fame in motor racing, winning the first Formula One world championships in 1950 and 1951, and it built sports and saloon cars such as the Spider and the Giulia. Alfa Romeo was bought by Fiat in 1986. The marque is known for sporting driving character and for its close ties to motor racing, and it has built a long series of small sporting coupes and saloons since the early twentieth century.
