Singer was a British car marque of Singer Motors Limited, a business that began as a bicycle maker founded by George Singer in Coventry in 1874 and made cars and commercial vehicles from 1901. It is remembered for the Singer Ten of 1912, the first small economy car built as a replica of a large car, the entire first year of which William Rootes, then a Singer apprentice, contracted to buy. The Rootes Group acquired the business in 1956 and continued the brand until 1970, a few years after Chrysler took over Rootes.
