Rainier was an American maker of large, luxurious and conventional, solidly built automobiles, founded in 1905 by John T. Rainier in Flushing, New York, and produced from 1908 in a new plant in Saginaw, Michigan. It earned local success in hill climbs and mountain races and was among the first to offer a limited one year guarantee on use without repair expenses. A cash shortage during the Panic of 1907 pushed it into involuntary bankruptcy, and it was auctioned in January 1909. General Motors bought it in 1909 and kept the brand until 1911, organizing the Marquette Motor Company in Saginaw to build the Rainier and parts for the Welch.
