Global Electric Motorcars, usually called GEM, is an American maker of neighborhood electric vehicles and low-speed vehicles. The company began in 1992 as Trans2, was bought by North Dakota investors and moved to Fargo, and built its first GEM car in April 1998, a two-seater with a top speed of 20 mph. DaimlerChrysler Corporation acquired it in December 2000 and it stayed with Chrysler until Polaris bought it in 2011. The 72-volt battery-electric cars are street legal in nearly all US states on roads limited to 35 mph or less and are used by campuses, resorts, planned communities and government fleets. Since January 2022 it has been a subsidiary of Waev.
