Cartercar

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Cartercar was an American automobile company established in 1905 in Jackson, Michigan, by Byron J. Carter, who left the Jackson Automobile Company after a disagreement with his partners over the choice of transmission. The firm moved to Detroit within the year and, from 1907 under the name Cartercar Company, to Pontiac, where it merged with the makers of the Pontiac High wheeler. The car drew a warm reception in the press largely for its friction drive transmission, a forerunner of the continuously variable transmission, and sales rose from 101 in 1906 to 325 in 1908. General Motors bought it on October 26, 1909, and its board later decided to discontinue the Cartercar and use the factory to build the Oakland.
