Grumman

Grumman was an American aerospace and defense manufacturer founded in 1929 by Leroy Grumman and colleagues on Long Island, New York, best known for building carrier-based fighter aircraft for the United States Navy through much of the twentieth century, including the Wildcat, Hellcat, Tigercat and Tomcat fighters. Beyond military aviation the company built the Apollo Lunar Module that carried astronauts to the surface of the Moon, along with amphibious aircraft, general-aviation designs and specialty vehicles including postal delivery trucks. Grumman merged with Northrop Corporation in 1994 to form Northrop Grumman, ending Grumman's existence as an independent company while its aircraft designs and engineering culture continued within the merged firm.
