The Renault R35, short for Char léger Modèle 1935 R, was a French light infantry tank of the Second World War. It was designed from 1933 onwards and produced from 1936 as an infantry support tank for autonomous tank battalions, relatively well armoured but slow and fitted with a short 37 mm gun. A Renault V-4 engine of 85 hp sat at the right of the short rear, and the tank had a road speed of 20 km/h and a range of 130 km. The hull weighed 10.6 metric tonnes in all, or 9.8 tonnes without fuel and ammunition. About 1685 R35 and R40 tanks had been produced by June 1940, and the type was exported to Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia.
