Renault EG

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Renault EG was an all-wheel drive truck and artillery tractor made by Renault between 1914 and 1919. It was tested in the 1914 trials for all-terrain vehicles organised by the French military, and Renault dropped a lighter version, the FB, to concentrate on it. Mass production began in 1915 and about 978 were built by the end of the First World War, although one source counts 1,132 delivered to the French army. Together with the Berliet CBA, the Latil TAR and the Saurer Type B, EGs were key vehicles of the Voie Sacrée that supplied the army during the Battle of Verdun. The engine is an 8.49-litre inline-four of 35 to 45 metric horsepower, the wheels are cast steel and the same size front and rear, and four-wheel steering improves the turning circle. Payload is 2,000 kilograms and it can haul about 15 tonnes. About 635 were still in service in October 1939, but most were destroyed in 1940.
