The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, known as the HMMWV or Humvee, is a family of light four-wheel-drive military trucks and utility vehicles built by AM General for the United States armed forces and many other users. It was meant to replace the Vietnam-era M151 jeep, the M561 Gama Goat and the commercial utility cargo vehicles with one versatile platform. AM General won the Army contract on 22 March 1983 after competing against prototypes from Chrysler and Teledyne Continental, and production began in April 1984 at its Mishawaka, Indiana plant. The Humvee saw wide use in the Gulf War, and its unarmoured original design proved vulnerable to roadside bombs in the Iraq War, which led to armoured variants such as the M1114 and M1151 and to the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle being chosen as its long-term replacement.
