Fiat 20

The Fiat Tipo 20 was a heavy truck used as an artillery tractor, so exceptional were its characteristics that it was nicknamed the giant. Designed and built by the Italian maker Fiat V.I. in 1915, it came from a study begun in 1912 on an order from the army of the King of Italy for a vehicle able to move military equipment over war terrain. It was presented at the end of 1914 and adopted at once, the army ordering 800 for use in the First World War, and more than 800 were registered between 1915 and 1918. It was later offered in a civilian version for exceptional transport. In homologation trials, with crawler tracks fitted on both rear axles, inspectors noted that it could pull a trailer load of 111 tonnes, made up of fifteen fully loaded Fiat 18 BL trucks, though the report does not say whether that was its maximum.
