The Volkswagen Transporter T5 is the fifth generation of the Transporter series of medium-sized light commercial vehicles from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which also covers the Caravelle and Multivan people mover range. It was launched on 6 October 2002 and went into full production on 25 April 2003, replacing the fourth generation T4. Key markets for the range are Germany, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Russia, France, Turkey and Singapore. A high-output version comes as standard with a 174 PS Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine that gives 400 newton-metres of torque at 2,000 rpm and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Body variants include the Kombi, a van with side windows and removable rear seats, and a crew cab pick-up, and the California campervan range was designed and built in-house on the T5 platform. In lieu of the T5, Volkswagen marketed the Canadian-built Routan in North America.
