The Volkswagen LT is the largest light commercial panel van produced by Volkswagen, and subsequently by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as of 1996, from 1975 to 2006, before being replaced by the Crafter. Two generations were produced. Volkswagen had introduced the Type 2 in 1950 and developed light commercial versions for German and European markets, but the Type 2 platform was limited by its rear-mounted engine, so the new van was launched in 1975 in Berlin with a conventional rear drive layout and the engine above the front axle in a forward control cab over design. The diesel engines were later replaced with a more modern version of the same block, the DW naturally aspirated diesel giving way to the ACT engine and the DV turbo-diesel to the intercooled ACL engine. The name Kombi, under which the Type 2 was sold in Brazil, became a concept term for an entire light commercial vehicle segment.
