Volkswagen California

The Volkswagen California is a campervan based on the mid-sized Transporter panel van, developed by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and sold since 2003. It is the first campervan designed and built in-house by the VWCV Special Business Unit, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Previously Volkswagen offered the Westfalia Camper, which Westfalia manufactured on chassis that Volkswagen built for it exclusively. The VWCV-designed campervan, based on the T4 Transporter, was launched in August 2003 and was originally called the Volkswagen Westfalia to provide branding continuity. Once Westfalia became its own company in 2005, Volkswagen rebranded it as the Westfalia California until 2012, when it received its present name. The tougher rigid doors replaced the fragile concertina style tambour doors of the previous Ocean and Coast models, and the California Beach has the option of an elevating pop top aluminium roof.
