Fiat 682

The Fiat 682 is a truck and semi-trailer tractor produced by Fiat Veicoli Industriali from 1952 to 1988. In 1952 Italy adopted a new highway code that imposed new rules on truck payloads, and at the end of the year Fiat replaced the 680 N, in production since 1948, with the 682 N. The first model took over, with a slight power increase, the engine of the 680, a six cylinder of 10.17 litres with a bore of 122 millimetres, and so was called the Fiat 682 122. The chassis, cab, gearbox and differential were newly designed. At its debut there was a single version, a 4x2 truck with a wheelbase of 3.8 metres and a gross mass of 14 tonnes as the new code required; the 682T, a 4x2 road tractor with a wheelbase of 3.3 metres, followed. Many were converted by outside firms to 6x2 with a third rear axle. The first 682 N had many defects, notably the new two-valve head.
