Enrique Peñalosa

Enrique Peñalosa Londoño, born September 30, 1954, is a Colombian politician and urban planner who served two separate terms as mayor of Bogotá, from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2016 to 2020. During his first term he championed a transport centered vision of urban development, building the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system, an extensive network of dedicated busways that became an internationally studied model for low cost, high capacity public transport in large cities. His administration also expanded Bogotá's bicycle path network and public space, arguing that a city's transport priorities should favor pedestrians, cyclists and public transit users over private car traffic. His approach influenced transit and urban planning policy in cities across Latin America and beyond.
