Jan Gehl (born 17 September 1936 in Copenhagen) is a Danish architect and urban design consultant based in Copenhagen whose career has focused on improving the quality of urban life by re-orienting city design toward the pedestrian and cyclist. He authored the influential book Life Between Buildings and has advised major cities worldwide, including New York City, whose street redesigns his recommendations directly informed, helping transform Copenhagen itself from a car dominated city into one prioritizing pedestrian zones and bicycling.
