Mode Choice and Travel Demand Concepts

Ideas about why travellers and shippers pick one mode of transport over another, and how public policy tries to change that choice, such as the deliberate move of trips from private cars to rail, bus or cycling, or of freight from trucks to rail or water. An entry belongs here when the cited article calls the concept a shift between modes, a measure of how travel is divided among modes, or a policy aimed at changing the demand for one mode. It excludes the day to day measures that run a transit system, such as headway and right of way, which belong with the transit operations concepts. Entries are placed by what their own cited article says, so each one sits in the narrowest group its source supports, and the group page lists it beside the other members.
