A pirogue is any of various small traditional boats, particularly dugouts and canoes, used along rivers, bayous and coastal waters in parts of Africa, the Caribbean and the Cajun bayou country of Louisiana. The word entered French and English by way of the Spanish piragua, itself derived from a Kalinago word for a dugout canoe, and the boats are typically shaped and paddled or poled for shallow, calm water rather than open sea conditions.
