Karve

A karve is a type of ship built during the Viking Age, generally smaller than the well-known Viking longship and intended for everyday coastal trade, transport and smaller raiding expeditions rather than large-scale naval campaigns. Like other Viking Age ships, the karve was clinker-built, its hull planks overlapping and fastened together, and it was propelled by a combination of oars and a single square sail mounted on a central mast. Karves were versatile working vessels rather than the largest or most prestigious ships of the period, and archaeological examples recovered from Scandinavian burial mounds have provided much of what is known about their construction.
