Convair Model 200

Supersonic and Experimental Aircraft

The Convair Model 200 was a 1973 design for a supersonic vertical takeoff and landing fighter for the United States Navy's planned Sea Control Ship. It was a single-jet delta-winged aircraft with canards, drawn as a VTOL Model 200A with two lift engines behind the cockpit and a main engine whose exhaust pipe could swivel 90 degrees, and as a conventional Model 201 for catapult launch and arrested landing. Top speed was to be Mach 2. Neither the aircraft nor the ship was built, though wind tunnel models and a full-size forward fuselage mock-up were made, and its swivel nozzle design later informed the nozzle of the F-35B.
