The General (locomotive)

Steam and Early Locomotives

The General is an American 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in 1855 for the Western and Atlantic Railroad, remembered chiefly for its role in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, when Union raiders seized the train in Confederate Georgia in an attempt to disrupt rail supply lines during the American Civil War. The chase and the ultimately unsuccessful raid became one of the best known railroad episodes of the war, and the preserved locomotive remains a museum exhibit in Georgia today.
