Honda started the NR series in 1979 with the NR500, a 500 cc Grand Prix racer with oval pistons. The NR series began as Honda made its comeback in Grand Prix motorcycle racing at the end of the 1970s, having been absent since the very successful 1960s. The oval piston allowed eight valves per cylinder in a four-cylinder engine, with 32 valves and eight connecting rods in the dimensions of a regular four-cylinder engine.
