Japan had the NC50 Road Pal from January 1976, and a renamed version, the Express, reached the North American market in 1977. Honda designed it to enter the large scooter market that appeared after the 1973 oil crisis, with an economical single cylinder two stroke engine, a fully automatic transmission and a small oil pump that mixes oil and fuel by itself. In April 1977 the Honda Varie appeared with a Variomatic style continuously variable transmission.
