Honda launched the Super Cub in 1958, ten years after Honda Motor Co. Ltd. was established, as the C100 with a 49 cc four stroke single cylinder engine. Sales were slow at first, mainly because of the recession in Japan, and three months after launch customers complained of slipping clutches, so Honda salesmen and factory workers gave up their holidays to repair the affected machines, visiting each customer in person. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan later listed the 1958 Super Cub C100 among its 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology.
