Urban Transit Pioneers

Inventors and promoters who built the first workable forms of city public transport, such as the cable car systems that let street railways climb steep hills before electric traction was practical. An entry belongs here when the cited article calls the person the inventor, builder or promoter of a street railway, cable car or other early urban transit system. It excludes civil engineers who built roads and bridges and the inventors of bicycles and small personal vehicles, who have their own groups. Entries are placed by what their own cited article says, so each one sits in the narrowest group its source supports, and the group page lists it beside the other members.
