Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a joint venture of the states of New York and New Jersey, established on April 30, 1921 through an interstate compact authorized by the United States Congress, and headquartered at 4 World Trade Center in New York City. It oversees much of the region's transportation infrastructure, operating three major airports, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty, together with the seaport facilities that make up the Port of New York and New Jersey, six interstate bridges and tunnels including the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the PATH commuter rail system connecting Manhattan to New Jersey, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. The agency is financially independent, funded through tolls, rents and fees rather than general tax revenue, and its facilities collectively move millions of people and a large share of the northeastern United States' freight and passenger traffic every year.
