The air transport of freight rather than passengers, carried either in the belly holds of passenger aircraft or aboard dedicated freighter aircraft configured to carry cargo alone. Air cargo is far more expensive per unit of weight than surface freight modes, so it is used mainly for goods where speed matters most, such as perishable produce, urgent medical supplies, high-value electronics and express mail and parcels.
