Ferromex is the largest freight rail network in Mexico by mileage, beginning operation on February 19, 1998 after the privatization of Mexico's state-owned railways under President Ernesto Zedillo. Combined with its affiliate Ferrosur, the network spans about 12,100 kilometers of track connecting Mexico's Pacific and Gulf coast ports, its northern border crossings into the United States, and its major industrial and agricultural regions, carrying freight such as minerals, automobiles, grain, chemicals and intermodal containers. Headquartered in Mexico City, the network is majority owned by the mining and infrastructure conglomerate Grupo Mexico, with a minority stake held by Union Pacific Railroad, giving it direct interchange connections into the wider North American rail network. As Mexico's dominant freight corridor, Ferromex's route network plays a central role in cross-border supply chains linking Mexican manufacturing and resource extraction to United States and Canadian markets.
