The Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway, known as the ADR, was a company formed in 1882 from the former Newport Dock Company of 1865, created to meet demand for dock accommodation in Newport, South Wales, chiefly for exporting or coastally transporting iron ore and coal. To bring coal to Newport from the Taff and Cynon valleys, the nominally independent but closely linked Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Newport Railway was built, opening in 1884 and absorbed by the ADR in 1897. Before 1914 the Alexandra Docks were among the largest in the world by water area and capacity to handle large vessels, and although decline in the South Wales mineral industries reduced its activity, the docks remain active today as a general cargo facility within Associated British Ports.
