The ALCO DL560C is a diesel-electric locomotive design with AC electric transmission that the American Locomotive Company drew up and Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi, India, built under licence for Indian Railways. It carries a 16-cylinder ALCO 251 engine. In the early 1960s Indian Railways needed a reliable diesel to replace steam, and trials pitted 40 DL560C units against 40 EMD G16 units. ALCO agreed to transfer its technology while EMD did not, so the DL560C was chosen and was built in India in large numbers. Its descendants include the WDM-2, WDM-3A, WDM-3D and WDG-3A classes, plus export versions for Sri Lanka, and it remains the main diesel power of Indian Railways.
